Understanding Play Therapy and Early Intervention: Common Questions Answered
We’re here to support you and your family
Every child is different, and the progress they make in therapy will depend on their individual situation, including their personality, experiences, and the nature of their challenges.
Our approach is to support your child in a way that fosters long-term emotional well-being, rather than pushing for quick fixes.
We focus on creating a safe space where your child can express themselves and gradually develop the tools they need to thrive. Patience and consistency are key to creating lasting, meaningful changes for your child.

-
Can play therapy help my child with Autism or ADHD?Absolutely! At Inspiring Play, we specialise in working with children who are neurodivergent, including those with Autism and ADHD. Our Child-Centred Play Therapy provides a safe space for your child to express themselves, work through emotions, and build important skills such as emotional regulation and social communication. We use a neuroaffirming and evidence-based approach that celebrates your child’s unique strengths and helps them navigate the world in a way that feels safe and supportive.
-
My child struggles with anxiety. Can play therapy help?Yes, play therapy is a powerful tool for helping children manage anxiety. We offer a safe, compassionate environment where your child can explore their feelings and learn coping strategies through play. Whether your child is dealing with social anxiety, separation anxiety, or general worry, we work from a trauma-informed lens to support their emotional wellbeing and build resilience.
-
What does neuroaffirming practice mean? How will it help my child?Neuroaffirming practice means that we honour and support your child's neurodiversity, whether they are Autistic, have ADHD, or are neurodivergent in other ways. We don’t aim to change your child; instead, we work to understand their unique perspective and create a therapy environment where they feel accepted and safe. This approach supports emotional wellbeing and self-confidence, helping your child thrive.
-
How is Child-Centred Play Therapy different from other types of therapy?Child-Centred Play Therapy allows your child to take the lead. Instead of directing their play or pushing for specific outcomes, we provide a space where they can express themselves freely through play, which is their natural way of communicating. This non-directive approach helps your child feel in control and safe, promoting healing and growth on their terms.
-
I want fast results for my child. Can play therapy provide quick changes? While we understand the desire to see quick improvements, Child-Centred Play Therapy is a process that takes time and is tailored to each child’s unique needs. Play therapy honours your child’s pace, allowing them to explore their emotions, challenges, and experiences in a safe, non-pressured way. Just like building trust and connection in any relationship, true emotional healing and growth take time.
-
How do you involve parents in the therapy process? We believe in working closely with families to support your child’s development. While the therapy sessions focus on the child, we provide regular updates, discuss progress, and offer strategies to support your child at home. You are an important part of your child’s journey, and we’re here to partner with you every step of the way.
-
My child has trouble regulating their emotions. Can play therapy help with that?Yes, Child-Centred Play Therapy is especially effective for helping children learn self-regulation. Through play, children practice managing emotions and finding ways to cope with frustration, anger, and sadness. Over time, they build skills to calm themselves and navigate their feelings more effectively.
-
Do you work with children who have experienced trauma?Yes, our practice is trauma-informed, meaning we understand the impact of trauma on a child’s brain, emotions, and behaviours. We offer a safe, non-judgmental space for children to process difficult experiences at their own pace. Using evidence-based practices, we support your child’s journey towards healing, helping them build trust, safety, and emotional resilience.
